Melissa Barrera Joins Radio Silence’s Universal Monster Movie

Just days ago, it was announced that the filmmaking collective Radio Silence would be making a new horror movie for Universal. Now, the film has a star, with Deadline reporting that Melissa Barrera is attached to the project.

Barrera is no stranger to working with Radio Silence, having starred in 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, both of which were created by the group. It’s unclear exactly who Barrera will play, but the report mentions that while developing the project last year, Radio Silence offered the actress the part after working with her on both Scream films.

Currently, it’s unknown exactly what the film will be based on, but according to THR, the film was known as Dracula’s Daughter at one point and centered on a group of kidnappers who abduct a group of young people, with one of them being the daughter of the iconic vampire.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct the project, with Radio Silence’s Chad Villella acting as producer on the film. Alongside the collective, William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and James Vanderbilt of Project X Entertainment will also produce the film. The script for the as-of-yet untitled project was written by Stephen Shields, with revisions by Guy Busick.

The report also mentions that the film is another in Universal’s more unique takes on their iconic horror characters. Past remakes include Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man and the upcoming supernatural horror comedy film Renfield, with the outlet noting that the films present “a unique take on legendary monster lore and will represent a fresh, new direction for how to celebrate these classic characters.”

Radio Silence is best known for their work on the past two Scream films, with the latest, Scream VI, garnering massive praise and becoming a hit at the box office. Prior to their work on the Scream films, the trio also the 2019 black comedy horror film Ready or Not and released various short films in the horror anthology series V/H/S, as well as 2015’s Southbound.
