James Gunn Details Casting Approach, Confirms January DCU Announcements

The future of the DC Universe is about to get a bit clearer, as co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn took to Twitter over the weekend to discuss some of the casting choices coming up in the DCU.

Replying to a fans tweet over the weekend, Gunn responded to a message that asked him not to cast the Guardians of the Galaxy actors in the DCU, but to instead find new actors. Gunn noted that there are “hundreds of roles” to cast, and that plenty will be new faces, while some others will be actors that Gunn has worked with before.

“We have hundreds of roles to cast,” said Gunn. “As I’ve always done, some will be brand new faces, some will be actors I’ve worked with before, & some will be actors you know who I’ve never worked with. What matters most is the actor fits the role & they’re easy to work with.”

In a follow up tweet, Gunn responded to a fan that asked whether or not some future DCU projects would still be announced in January. Gunn confirmed they would, but didn’t offer up anything beyond that. Thankfully for fans who might be curious, there’s just over a week left in the month, so more information should be available soon.

While much of the DCU’s future remains a mystery, Gunn recently announced that Henry Cavill would be exiting the role of Superman and that Gunn would be writing a new Superman movie. Additionally, several notable cameos have been nixed from The Flash and Wonder Woman 3 is no longer in development. There are also reports that Jason Momoa will no longer be Aquaman and will instead be recast as another DC character.

The next DC Universe release will be Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which releases on March 17, 2023. It will be followed by The Flash, starring the troubled Ezra Miller, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The future afterward is currently uncertain as Gunn and Safran decide upon their 10-year plan for the DC
