The Mummy 4: Brendan Fraser Open to Return, Explains Why Tom Cruise’s Reboot Failed

Brendan Fraser rose to superstardom thanks to his role in the adventure film franchise The Mummy. In a recent interview with Variety, the actor said he would love to return to the franchise, but isn’t sure how it would work.

“I don’t know how it would work,” Fraser said in the interview. “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right concept.”

Of course, in between Fraser’s appearances in The Mummy franchise and now, Universal attempted to reboot the franchise with Tom Cruise attached as the new lead. The film did not perform well at the box office, as it flopped and essentially doomed Universal’s plans to bring its “Dark Universe” into the new era in the process. According to Fraser, the reason that film failed was simply because it lacked the fun that the previous films had.

“It is hard to make that movie,” said Fraser. “The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”

Fraser’s career has seen an upswing as of late, with the actor starring in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, as well as appearing in the upcoming Martin Scorsese film Killers of the Flower Moon, and portraying Robotman in the popular television series Doom Patrol.
