Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Film Reportedly Eyeing Early 2023 Start Date

Taika Waititi’s upcoming Star Wars film was initially said to be in the very early stages of development. However, according to a new report, things might be further along than many realized.

In the latest edition of The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, Aaron Couch and Borys Kit mention that Waititi’s Star Wars project may be coming way sooner than most people think. The newsletter reports that the project is eyeing “an early 2023 start,” per multiple sources. While this doesn’t signify a release date, it does seem to be further along than what other reports — and even Waititi himself — have said in the past.

Recently, Waititi said that he hadn’t been working much on the film as of yet and that it definitely wouldn’t start this year due to his work on other projects including Our Flag Means Death and Time Bandits. This led many to believe that the project was still years away. However, this report seems to suggest that Lucasfilm is ready to begin work on it as soon as possible.

The future of Star Wars films has been a hot topic of conversation as of late, especially due to the rise in popularity of the many Disney+ television series currently in the works. As far as films go, the only two films currently in the works for Star Wars are Waititi’s movie and the Rogue Squadron film that director Patty Jenkins is set to film at an unknown time in the future. A planned trilogy from Rian Johnson had also been announced but seems to be on the backburner as of now.
