Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Adds Maria Bakalova for a Key Role

A month after principal photography officially wrapped on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Deadline brings word that Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova will be portraying an unnamed key role in Marvel Studios’ long-awaited third installment. Her casting comes after the recent confirmation of The Suicide Squad breakout Daniela Melchior’s appearance in the upcoming film.

Bakalova gained worldwide recognition for her role in Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She will next be seen in the A24’s slasher comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is once again written and directed by James Gunn. It features the return of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel as they reprise their respective roles as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Kraglin, Nebula, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot. Joining them are MCU newcomers Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji, with Poulter confirmed to be playing the role of Adam Warlock.

The space-traveling team was last seen in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where they were joined by Chris Hemsworth’s Thor during the final moments of the film. Because of this, some of the Guardians of the Galaxy stars, including Pratt, Bautista, and Gillan, are set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.

The long-delayed film is currently scheduled to debut on May 5, 2023.
