Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Ed Skrein Replaces Rupert Friend, 3 Added to Cast

Nearly a month since production had begun on Rebel Moon, Deadline brings word that Deadpool star Ed Skrein has officially signed on to star in Zack Snyder’s next original film for Netflix. In addition, Cleopatra Coleman (Dopesick), Fra Fee (Hawkeye), and Rhian Rees (Nope) have also been cast to join the sci-fi action film.

Skrein will be replacing Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Rupert Friend as the film’s new antagonist. Friend, who recently worked with the streamer on the Anatomy of a Scandal series, decided to exit the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Described as a fantasy epic, Rebel Moon is being directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he is co-writing with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, based on a story by Snyder and Johnstad.

“The film is set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius,” reads the synopsis. “They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.”

The film stars Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), Doona Bae (Sense8), Ray Fisher (Zack Snyder’s Justice League),  Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Corey Stoll (House of Cards), and Stuart Martin (Army of Thieves).

Additional cast includes Jena Malone (Goliath, The Neon Demon), Staz Nair (Game of Thrones, Supergirl), Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), Alfonso Herrera (Queen of the South), E. Duffy (Acid Noir, Girlfriends), Charlotte Maggi (MaveriX), and Sky Yang (Halo, Holding).

Rebel Moon is produced by Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, and Zack Snyder for The Stone Quarry along with Grand Electric’s Eric Newman. Sarah Bowen will executive produce for Grand Electric.
