Originally announced to be starring in Millenium’s long-in-development film adaptation of the iconic comic book series in 2021, John-Kamen — who also starred in Marvel Studio’s Ant-Man and The Wasp — has reportedly “fallen out” of the film, with no other reason given as to why the actress chose to step away from things. The producers of the film are reportedly looking to cast a new actress in the role following John-Kamen’s departure.

The report also mentions that Joel Soloway, who was announced as the director of the film after several had been attached, also stepped away from the project. However, the report notes that M.J. Bassett (Rogue, Silent Hill: Revelation) has been tabbed as Soloway’s replacement. Production on the film was not set to start until later this year, so the team behind the film is hoping to cast a new star quickly before they’re faced with yet another delay.

Red Sonja is a sword-and-sorcery character that was created by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973. The character is described as fiery and strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Conan while refusing his advances. Her solo comics are still being published today through Dynamite Entertainment.

The reboot film has been in development since 2010 and a handful of directors had been attached to helm the project.
