Batgirl Director Describes Cancelled Movie as a 'Blend Between Nolan and Burton'

HBO Max’s Batgirl Film Adds Ethan Kai, Rebecca Front & Corey Johnson

As production continues on Batgirl in Scotland, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Ethan Kai (London Kills), Corey Johnson (Hellboy), and BAFTA winner Rebecca Front (The Thick of It) have been cast to join Leslie Grace in HBO Max’s upcoming DC film. Further details about their characters are still being kept under wraps, but some fans are speculating that Kai might be playing Dick Grayson, given that recent set photos hint at the Boy Wonder’s existence within the film’s DC universe.

The Batgirl film will be led by In the Heights star Leslie Grace as she portrays the role of Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon. The hero was first seen in the 1967 Batman series with the late Yvonne Craig playing Barbara. Batgirl’s first comic book appearance was in Detective Comics #357 by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

The live-action film will also feature the return of Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Zack Snyder’s Justice League) and Michael Keaton (The Flash), who are set to reprise their respective roles of Commissioner Gordon, and Bruce Wayne/ Batman. Joining them are Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), and Brendan Fraser (The Mummy trilogy) in his second role with the DC Universe as the villain Firefly.

Batgirl is being directed by Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a screenplay written by Christina Hodson (Birds of PreyThe Flash). The film is a production by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films, with Kristin Burr (Cruella) producing.

Batgirl/Barbara Gordon’s last appearance in a live-action big-screen feature was in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, released in 1997 and starring Alicia Silverstone in the role alongside George Clooney’s Batman and Chris O’Donnell’s Robin.
