Creator Confirms Peaky Blinders Film Will Begin Production in 2023

During the 2021 BFI London Film Festival, creator Steven Knight confirmed that the Peaky Blinders film will begin production in 2023, according to Variety. As previously reported, the series wrapped its sixth and final season in May, and Knight revealed during a panel that editing on Season 6 is nearly complete. The final season of the hit BBC and Netflix series is expected to launch in spring 2022.

“And then I am going to write the feature which will be set in and shot in Birmingham,” Knight said at the panel. “And that will probably be the sort of the end of the road for Peaky Blinders as we know it.”

Knight once again mentioned that the Peaky Blinders universe could potentially continue in other related shows, but he revealed if any spin-offs were to happen he would not “necessarily be supervising them,” preferring to “pass on the baton.”

Peaky Blinders is set in the lawless streets of Birmingham as it tracks the evolution of leader Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) from backstreet crime lord to legitimate businessman and member of parliament. The fifth season finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929. When Tommy Shelby MP is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realizes that his response will impact not only the future of his family but that of the entire nation.

Along with Murphy, some of the returning cast members include the late Helen McCrory (Skyfall) as Polly Gray, Paul Anderson (The Revenant) as Arthur Shelby, Sophie Rundle (Bodyguard) as Ada Thorne (Shelby), and Finn Cole (Animal Kingdom) as Michael Gray. The cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Gina Gray, Brian Gleeson (Phantom Thread) as Jimmy McCavern, Neil Maskell (In Darkness) as Winston Churchill, and Sam Claflin (The Nightingale) as Oswald Mosley. New cast members include James Frecheville (Animal Kingdom), Conrad Khan (The Hunstman: Winter’s War), and Amber Anderson (Emma.).

The final season of the Peaky Blinders is directed by Anthony Byrne (In Darkness) from a script written by Steven Knight with Nick Goding set as a producer. Executive producers are Caryn Mandabach, Steven Knight, Jamie Glazebrook, David Mason, Anthony Byrne, and Cillian Murphy along with BBC’s Tommy Bulfin and Tiger Aspect’s Lucy Bedford. Peaky Blinders, from Caryn Mandabach Productions, is co-produced with Tiger Aspect Productions and distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.

The first five seasons are available to stream now on Netflix.
