Taika Waititi Gives Updates on Star Wars & Live-Action Akira Films

Take Waititi is one of Hollywood’s busiest men, with the highly popular director working on a ton of different projects. Speaking to Wired in a new interview, Waititi gave out some updates on some of his more anticipated works.

With Thor: Love and Thunder now finished filming, Waititi’s next focus is on his Star Wars film, something that Waititi says hasn’t evolved much beyond knowing that things would be set in space.

“It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage,” he joked. “But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me.” Has it been a challenge to marry his irreverent tone with the operatically sincere Star Wars universe? “I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films,” he says. “I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”

When it comes to his rumored live-action adaptation of Akira, a film that has gone through a lengthy development process, Waititi says that things are still moving, and that he is “still trying” to make the film, and doesn’t want to “give up” on it.

His next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder, will feature the return of Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman, whose Jane Foster is now expected to take on the mantle of the Mighty Thor and will be wielding the iconic Mjolnir. Oscar-winner Christian Bale will also be making his return to the superhero genre as he signs on for the villainous role of Gorr the God Butcher.

The film will also feature a number of MCU alums such as Jaime Alexander as Sif, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Waititi as Korg, and Guardians of the Galaxy stars including Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill, Karen Gillan’s Nebula, Sean Gunn’s Kraglin, and Vin Diesel’s Groot. Thanks to previous set photos, it has also been revealed that Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth will once again return for cameo roles along with Melissa McCarthy and Russell Crowe.
