IMAX Update: Mortal Kombat, Demon Slayer & Rurouni Kenshin Impress

Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer made their debut in the United States this weekend and both the video game adaptation and the anime film did well on IMAX screens.

As for Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat, it was the biggest performer this weekend as it raked in $2.7 million from 375 IMAX screens. That takes its global accumulation to $4.3 million. The North American screens alone accounted for $2.5 million of the total.

Meanwhile, Demon Slayer had an early preview on Thursday and its limited western release saw it bring in $710,000. The Funimation distributed film now sits at $28.6 million with $25 million coming from Japan. It’s the all-time biggest non-Chinese local title and the 4th highest-grossing local-language title for IMAX.

In other anime film news, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final released in Japan. However, its opening was marred by Japan entering a two-week state of emergency due to COVID-19, which meant that theaters were closed on Sunday in many prefectures including Tokyo and Osaka. This led to it only raking in $450,000, but that number is impressive with everything considered. Plus, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet added $275,000 this weekend bringing its IMAX total to $1.8 million.
