Raya and the Last Dragon Tops Box Office in Second Weekend

Raya and the Last Dragon tops box office with $5.5 million in second weekend

Another slow box office weekend saw Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon take in $5.5M from 2,163 theaters in Week 2, down 35% from its opening weekend. As it stands, the animated adventure has pulled in $15.8M domestically, according to Deadline. Internationally, the film collected $11.5M to bring its overseas total to $36M and its worldwide total to $52,637,165. Again, the meager box office is mostly the result of Disney’s failure to appease Cinemark, Harkins, Canada’s Cineplex and other exhibitors who refused to play the film.

Good news is on the horizon, however, as theaters in Los Angeles have been given the green light to reopen, albeit to limited capacity. Though, limited capacity is still better than nothing. At this stage, things are looking good for WB’s Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat (both releasing simultaneously on HBO Max) and Disney and Marvel’s Black Widow, which is still slated for a theatrical release on May 7.

Back at the box office, Tom & Jerry earned $4.1M (-38%) in its third weekend to bring its domestic total to $28.2M. Chaos Walking, meanwhile, landed at No. 3 with $2.2M in its second weekend. To date, the Tom Holland/Daisy Ridley YA adaptation has earned $6.9M, which is… not great, even by pandemic standards.

The only new release to land in the Top 10 was Jaithi Ratnalu, which earned $460K from 130 theaters.

INTERNATIONAL

The big news this weekend was the re-release of Avatar in China where it earned an estimated $21.1M, which was enough to help the James Cameron blockbuster regain its title of worldwide box office champ from Avengers: Endgame. Per the trade, Avatar’s weekend total marks the highest reissue opening weekend in the market since movie theaters returns last July. Analysts see the film totaling $61.2M during its reissue, which, oddly enough, would put it on track to match or overtake Tenet’s total gross in the Middle Kingdom.

In Imax, Avatar grossed $6.2M, which extended the film’s lead as Imax’s biggest movie ever with $249.5M. And people say Avatar isn’t relevant anymore. If anything, this should give Cameron and Disney a lot of confidence ahead of Avatar 2 next year.
