The outlet has also confirmed new details about the main characters, revealing that the basketball superstar will be playing a heightened version of himself. Newcomer Cedric Joe is set to play James’ son Dom, who has trouble bonding with his father due to their differences. It also been revealed that MCU star Don Cheadle will be playing a CGI humanoid named AI G Rhythm, who will trapped the father and son duo into the Warner 3000 entertainment called “Server-verse.”

Producer Ryan Coogler explained their own take on the beloved film, confirming that the new film will center around the theme of fatherhood. “The general idea was the examination of Black fatherhood and how fatherhood could be unique to LeBron James specifically.”

James added, “There are parents who want to push their kids to do certain things because this is what they do, but sometimes you have to look into a kid and be able to have an open mind and ear to help them become the thing they’ve dreamed of.”

Space Jam: A New Legacy stars LeBron James instead of Michael Jordan with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler onboard to produce. Terence Nance (Random Acts of FlynessThe Oversimplification of Her Beauty) was set to direct instead of Justin Lin (Fast & Furious franchise), who was one of the directors originally attached to the project, but after some creative differences between the studio and producers and Nance on the vision for the film, they came to an amicable split and Malcolm D. Lee signed on to direct.

Though the long-awaited sequel won’t feature Steph Curry, Kevin Durant or James Harden, the film has landed an impressive roster so far with the Portland Trailblazers’ Damian Lillard, New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis, and Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson. Also joining the squad are Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi and Los Angeles Sparks’ siblings Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike, with Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) set to portray James’ wife, and Don Cheadle (Avengers: Endgame).
