Is there a Space Jam 3 release date?
Space Jam 3 does not have an official release date, but it might be announced in the future.
In 2021, Malcolm D. Lee, the director of the second film, reflected on the idea of a potential third film. “I never say never,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s all going to be about whether the fans respond to this positively. But I think the bar has been set so high in terms of the first one with this global iconic superstar in Michael Jordan, and now the same global iconic superstar in LeBron James, who transcends sports. Who is that next person to put into that universe? And then you’ve got to find a script and story that’s good enough to not repeat what’s been done but will capture the spirit of it and keep it going.”
Lee went on to speculate, “Dwayne Johnson would be an interesting choice [to star in the third film]. It would be different. I’m not exactly sure what his skillset would be, maybe he goes back to wrestling. That might be interesting.”
Since then, not much has been heard about the prospective film. In November 2023, legendary pro skater Tony Hawk told Hot Ones’ Chris Schonberger that he was in talks to star in the original Space Jam sequel, “Skate Jam,” in the early 2000s. According to Hawk, the project fell apart after the poor box-office outing of Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003)
Space Jam: A New Legacy was a commercial failure and made $163.7 million against its $150 million budget. So, while we can’t entirely rule out the possibility of a Space Jam 3, it might be a while before it goes into production.
