Ana Lily Amirpour’s ensemble Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon begins shooting
Deadline has brought word that Ana Lily Amirpour (The Bad Batch)’s next project Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon led by an ensemble cast including Korean breakout actress Jun Jong-Seo (Burning), Craig Robinson (This is the End), Kate Hudson (Deepwater Horizon) and Ed Skrein (Deadpool), has begun shooting in New Orleans.
The film, being written and directed by the mind behind A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, is a fantasy-adventure that follows a girl with unusual and dangerous powers who breaks out of a mental asylum and tries to get a hold of her abilities and make it on her own in New Orleans.
In addition to Jong-Seo, Robinson, Hudson and Skrein, the film will star Evan Whitten, who is best known for his roles portraying a younger Elliot (Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody) on the acclaimed USA Network thriller Mr. Robot and appearing on Fox’s hit medical drama The Resident. Zac Efron (Baywatch) was previously attached to star in the film, with Skrein replacing his place in the cast.
The film is being produced by Oscar winner John Lesher (Birdman) and Dylan Weathered (The Beach Bum) for Le Grisbi Productions, as well as Adam and Robbie Mirels for 141 Entertainment (Ingrid Goes West), while Erika Olde, Sam Roseme and Luke Rodgers will executive produce.
“It is an honor to be working with Lily, a truly unique and visionary filmmaker, and I want to especially thank Roeg Sutherland and Luke Rodgers for going the extra mile to get this movie made,” Lesher said in a statement.
Amirpour is also currently attached to direct a female-led reboot of the Sylvester Stallone 1993 action hit Cliffhanger.
