Is Harry Potter’s David Yates Going to Reboot Scarface?

After directing the final four “Harry Potter” movies, director David Yates has been in high demand and attached to a number of projects including a new version of Tarzan for Warner Bros., an adaptation of the Vertigo Comics series “Fables,” and he planned to reunite with Emma Watson for the smaller Your Voice in my Head–the latter is definitely not happening.

Now word comes from Deadilne that Yates is in final talks to direct a second attempted reboot of the iconic drug-dealing movie Scarface, first crafted as a 1932 bootlegging film before being reconstructed by director Brian De Palma for Al Pacino in the better known 1983 Miami cocaine-dealing crime classic.

Having been 30 years since that movie, Universal Pictures has been refining a script for an even more modern version of the story and David Yates is in final talks to direct as they hope to move forward with that project soon.

Before getting the “Harry Potter” gig, Yates was a prolific TV director behind the six-part political thriller “State of Play” (which Universal remade as a vehicle for Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck) as well as the Emmy-winning “The Girl in the Café,” starring Bill Nighy and Kelly Macdonald.

According to Deadline, this is not being considered a remake or a sequel to the earlier movie but a “reboot” about a crime kingpin “who through a ruthless campaign of ambition goes in hot pursuit of his American Dream – whatever that is in this decade.”

Former Universal head Marc Shmuger and his Global Produce banner is producing along with Martin Bregman, who produced the Pacino version.

The big question is whether Yates can set aside development on the Tarzan movie he’s doing for Warner Bros., which presumably they’ll want to also move soon on, to cross studio lines and make a movie for Universal Pictures.
