Details Finally Revealed About Rian Johnson’s Knives Out

Rian Johnson has finally let loose details of the plot for his follow-up to The Last Jedi (or interlude to his next Star Wars journey), the ultra-secretive Knives Out. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the writer-director was on hand at CinemaCon to not only screen some footage but offer up a few key plot points about the mysterious project.

According to the report, actress Jamie Lee Curtis explained that “the film centers on a detective (Daniel Craig) investigating a murder when he comes across an eccentric, combative family.” She also noted the family gathering setting “turns bloody very quickly. These people put the ‘dis’ in dysfunctional, which should play very well this Thanksgiving weekend.”

The title Knives Out appears to be apt based on the description.

During Lionsgate’s presentation, Johnson revealed that he is a die-hard Agatha Christie fan and that Knives Out was an attempt to take all the aspects he loved about the famed writer, “jam it into an all-star cast, give it a Hitchcock thriller, genre twist and set it in modern-day America.”

The presentation also included a trailer that focuses on two detectives (Craig and Lakeith Stanfield) investigating the death of a patriarch (Christopher Plummer) at a vast mansion. As they interrogate the family of the deceased, things begin to get ugly as family drama leads to bickering and one member telling the others to “Eat shit.”

While the trailer apparently stopped short of revealing any of the aforementioned bloody carnage, it did end with Craig’s detective teasing, “I suspect foul play, but I have eliminated no suspects,” in a thick, southern drawl.

The all-star ensemble cast of Knives Out also includes Chris Evans (Avengers: Infinity War), Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Don Johnson (Book Club), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Katherine Langford (Love, Simon), Riki Lindhome (Kidding), Edi Patterson (The Last O.G.), and Raúl Castillo (Atypical).

Craig committed to star in November after Danny Boyle suddenly left the Bond 25 project, and Johnson wrote the script and will be producing alongside partner Ram Bergman.

The film will be released on November 27.
