We’re approaching the fifth weekend for Obsession, yet it’s still topping the box office charts amid all of the competition this summer. Usually, most films in their fifth weekend would have been crowded out, but the legs on Obsession have been nigh-unprecedented. While the movie experienced its first dip last weekend, dropping by a mere 7 percent, it still brought in $25.3 million domestically, which is shockingly still more than the $17.1 million it made in its domestic opener. Obsession has already become the highest-grossing movie for Focus Features and has made its 26-year-old director Curry Barker one of the most sought-after filmmakers today. Even so, the movie has more box office records that it could break.
Obsession will likely become the biggest film festival acquisition ever
There has been a narrative going around that Obsession, which has earned $234 million at the global box office thus far, is already the highest-grossing movie to be acquired at a film festival, over the $222 million for Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11. But as Deadline points out, this is actually incorrect, and Obsession needs to beat The Blair Witch Project’s $248 million. However, given the latest box office predictions, the Blumhouse production will likely beat this record by the end of this weekend.
As projected by a June 10 report from BoxOfficeTheory, Obsession is expected to bring in $21.1 million domestically, which would bring its entire domestic total to $190.3 million. The weekend forecast from BoxOffice Pro is not as bullish, believing that the movie will only bring in somewhere between $12 million and $17 million, but it’s difficult to bet against the film. Even the report admits, “Why this particular film struck the kind of chord it has is hard to say, but the audience director Curry Barker cultivated online has come out in force, with GAs following suit.”
To put the most optimistically projected $190.3 million number into perspective, that would make the film the fifth highest-grossing film in 2026 domestically so far, above the $166 million of Pixar’s Hoppers. In fact, Obsession has already surpassed the $158 million of Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, despite it raking in a massive $81 million domestic opener. Obsession is expected to stay ahead of the Star Wars blockbuster while they both remain in theaters.
Meanwhile, the $21.1 million that Obsession is predicted to earn this coming weekend would place it third behind the projected $51.1 million for Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day and the $21.9 million for the Scary Movie reboot. The margin between the numbers for Obsession and Scary Movie 6 are very thin, so Obsession could still place second.
Over the next thirty days, the film will need to compete against Toy Story 5 (June 19), Supergirl (June 26), Jackass: Best and Last (June 26), Minions & Monsters (July 1), and Young Washington (July 3), so we’ll have to see how long it will be able to remain near the top of the box office charts. That said, earlier this week on Monday, Obsession grossed $4.2 million at the box office in its 25th day in theaters, putting it past the likes of Avengers: Endgame ($3.2 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($2.4 million). So the staying power for this horror film cannot be denied.
The movie’s worldwide total of $234 million (as of June 11) is made even more impressive given that the film only had a budget of $750,000. This would mean that Obsession has made more than 312 times its cost, during a time when most films are hoping just to break even by reaching 2.5 times its budget.
However, not everyone who was a part of the movie’s production has been pleased about its success.
