Chief Detective 1958: Everything To Know about Lee Je-Hoon New K-Drama

Chief Detective 1958 is an upcoming South Korean drama set to premiere in April 2024 on MBC. Starring Lee Je-Hoon in the lead role, the story revolves around a detective forming a team of unlikely detectives to fight corruption in society.

Set in the 1950s, the K-drama is the prequel to the classic series Chief Inspector, which ran for 18 years (1971-1989). At the same time, veteran actor Choi Bool-Am played Chief Inspector Park Young-Han in the OG drama Chief Detective 1958, which stars Je-Hoon as Detective Park Young-Han.

According to the latest preview trailer, Bool-Am will make a guest appearance in the upcoming K-drama. Take a look at his character here:

Chief Detective 1958 cast includes Lee Je-Hoon, Lee Dong-Hwi, Choi Woo-Sung, and Yoon Hyun-Soo in lead roles. The four form a team of detectives to fight corruption and crime in the society.

Je-Hoon plays Park Young-Han, a passionate and enthusiastic detective who has the highest number of arrests of trivial thieves. Despite being the most talented, his colleagues treat him like a child. Young-Han also deals with a traumatic past that makes him passionate about fighting against corruption. Before Chief Detective 1958, actor Je-Hoon had a few exciting roles in dramas, such as Taxi Driver, Where Stars Land, Move to Heaven, and Signal.

The second lead in the new MBC drama is Lee Dong-Hwi, playing the role of Kim Sang-Soon. Known as the “Mad Dog,” he can chew up criminals. He is Young-Han’s closest friend and a skilled yet savage detective. Actor Dong-Hwi is well-known for his comic roles; hence, viewers can expect some hilarious moments featuring him in K-drama. One of his famous dramas includes Reply 1988, in which he played Ryu Dong-Ryong.

The other two main actors in the series are Choi Woo-Sung and Yoon Hyun-Soo. Woo-Sung essays the role of Jo Kyung-Hwan, who has excellent fighting skills, and Hyun-Soo plays Seo Ho-Jung, who belongs to an elite society and dreams of becoming a skilled detective.

According to MyDramaList, the synopsis reads, “The drama will follow the story of Park Young Han, a passionate detective who boasts the highest arrest rate when it comes to petty thieves, as he teams up with three charismatic colleagues to break the norms of corruption.”

Chief Detective 1958 release date, time & more

Chief Detective 1958 premieres on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 9.50 p.m. KST on MBC. The K-drama will also stream on Disney Plus. 

In an interview with Osen, Lee Je-Hoon opened up about the reason he chose Detective Park’s role. He said, “The biggest [reason] was my great anticipation and curiosity for the prequel of Chief Inspector. It’s also an honor to be able to participate in the story of a project that received love from the entire nation to the extent that it broadcast for 18 years.”

Je-Hoon further described his role, stating, “Park Young-Han is a very innocent character whose passion and tenacity for catching the criminal is stronger than anyone else, and he is a young man with a passionate heart.”

Consisting of 10 episodes, Chief Detective 1958 will air twice a week on Fridays and Saturdays.
