Jo Jung-Suk & Shin Se-Kyung talk about their “nagging” chemistry in Captivating the King

The upcoming tvN K-drama Captivating the King revolves around Crown Prince Lee In. He meets a baduk player, Kang Hee-Soo, and the duo become friends. However, politics, royal struggles, power play, and betrayal take center stage when Lee In suddenly becomes the King. This changes his entire demeanor as well as his relationship with Hee-Soo. The latter also becomes a spy through unfortunate circumstances, eager to seek revenge.

The lead couple, Jo Jung-Suk and Shin Se-Kyung, who play King Lee In and Kang Hee-Soo, respectively, spoke about their chemistry in the K-drama. Jung-Suk recalled that he always wanted to work with Shin Se-Kyung, so he was extremely happy when he heard that she was cast opposite him. He further said (originally in Korean), “When we actually did it, the chemistry was so good that it was almost like nagging.”

Jong-Suk continued to reiterate that although the chemistry between the lead actors is important, it can only be relayed well on screen if the duo can establish good chemistry off-screen. He expressed that Se-Kyung “was very good in that aspect as well.”

Meanwhile, Shin Se-Kyung also had some positive reflections on her chemistry with Jong-Suk. She said (originally in Korean), “In the middle and latter half of the drama, Hee-Soo’s emotional conflict intensifies. As a result, I had a lot of worries while acting, but senior Jo Jung-Suk treated me so carefully and respected me on set, so I was able to focus on acting without worrying about anything else.”

Given the two established great chemistry, it will be interesting to see how it has played out in the K-drama. Don’t forget to tune in to Captivating the King on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at 9:20 p.m. KST on tvN and later on Netflix.
