Jang Dong-Yoon’s Like Flowers in Sand: Everything To Know About New Netflix K-Drama

Like Flowers in Sand is a new Netflix Korean drama starring Jang Dong-Yoon and Lee Joo-Myoung. It is a sports romance comedy series about a wrestling prodigy who wants to retire.

My Man is Cupid actor Jang Dong-Yoon essays the role of Kim Baek-Doo, the youngest son of a well-known Ssireum family. He is the wrestling prodigy who is a member of the Ssireum wrestling team. However, the genius wrestler seems to lose his touch with the sport one day, after which he decides to retire.

His decision and feelings begin to change when his childhood friend, Oh Yoo-Kyung, returns to her hometown. She meets him after joining the Ssireum management team as the leader.

Like Flowers in Sand is a highly anticipated K-drama that features Jang Dong-Yoon in the lead role. The actor takes the role of Kim Baek-Doo after his successful 2023 projects like Daily Dose of Sunshine and My Man Is Cupid.

Aside from him, the new Netflix drama cast sees Lee Joo-Myoung as Oh Yoo-Kyung, Yun Jong-Seok as Min Hyun-Wook, Kim Bo-Ra as Joo Mi-Ran, Lee Jae-Joon as Kwak Jin-Soo, Lee Joo-Seung as Jo Seok-Hee, and Hwang Jae-Yeol as Park Dong-Chan.

Other cast members include Kim Min-Seok as Kim Bum-Soo, Choi Moo-Sung as Kim Tae-Baek Jang, Young-Nam as Ma Jin-Sook, Yang Ki-Won as Kim Keum-Kang, and Lee Yoo-Joon as Kim Han-Ra.

The official synopsis of Like Flowers in Sand reads, “Struggling to find success, a former wrestling prodigy finds himself ready to quit until he reencounters an old friend who reignites his passion.”

As it is, Like Flowers in Sand revolves around Ssireum’s wrestling prodigy Baek-Doo. He played the sport his entire life to earn the prestigious ‘Jangsa’ title. When people around him begin to question his techniques, he starts to lose his confidence. So, Baek-Doo decides to retire.

The new Ssireum team’s management head Yoo-Kyung returns to her hometown and is often mistaken as Baek-Doo’s childhood best friend, Oh Du-Sik. She initially locks horns with Baek-Doo, who sometimes becomes sure that she is Du-Sik. Eventually, the two grow closer and Yoo-Kyung encourages him to not retire.

Meanwhile, the town hides a secret related to Du-Sik. New and old faces arrive at the Geosan County while the police solve a drowning case. 

Like Flowers in Sand release date, time & episodes

Like Flowers in Sand premieres on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at 9 p.m. KST on ENA. It will also be available on Netflix for streaming.

Consisting of 12 episodes, the K-drama will air twice a week – Wednesdays and Thursdays. The finale will be released on January 25, 2024.

ENA and Netflix have shared several photos and trailers. In the latest trailer, Jang Dong-Yoon’s Baek-Doo struggles to maintain his wrestling genius title. He gets drunk and calls his coach saying, “I’ll retire! If I don’t earn the Gangs title again this time, I’ll retire.” Simultaneously, he is pushed to prepare for civil-servant exams.

The video further shows the introduction of Lee Joo-Myoung as Oh Yoo-Kyung. The townspeople initially assume she is Oh Du-Sik. She keeps denying their misunderstanding, but Baek-Doo may not agree with Yoo-Kyung. She turns his life upside down and pushes him to continue the sport. The trailer ends with Yoo-Kyung telling him, “We need you, Baek-Doo. Both the team and I.”

Like Flowers in Sand will air on ENA and Netflix twice a week.
