Descendants of the Sun Ending Explained: Did Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo Get Their Happily Ever After?

Descendants of the Sun is one of the most popular rom-com K-dramas since 2016. The drama featured Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo in the lead. In addition, the series also starred Jin Goo and Kim Ji-Won in pivotal roles.

The drama is about a love story that blooms between a surgeon and a special force officer. It revolves around Kang Mo-Yeon (Hye-Kyo), a cardiothoracic surgeon who works with diligence and is not afraid to accept her mistake. She is quite pretty and positive about it. But soon she realizes that not everything gets done based on capability. However, her life changes after meeting a charismatic gentleman, Yoo Shi-Jin (Song Joong-Ki). But before their story could start, they got separated as Shi-Jin had to go on a special mission. And destiny had something else planned for them. In a certain turn of events, they meet again. What happens then is all about the drama.

Yes, Mo-Yeon and Shi-Jin get their happily ever after. But how did the drama end? So, without any further ado, let’s scroll ahead to find out.

Descendants of the Sun: Is it a happy or a sad ending?

Spoilers ahead. In the finale episode, Kang Mo-Yeon spends her days serving the greater good of the people after Shi-Jin’s disappearance from a special mission. She started to believe he was no more. But one day, in the Urk desert, she sees a man walking towards her. As she gets a clearer picture, she understands it’s none other than Yoo Shi-Jin. They spend some emotional moments with each other before learning about what actually happened in the mission. He shares how the North Korean army personnel helped him and saved his life in that situation. In another scene, a starving Shi-Jin can be seen having his ‘funeral’ food.

On the other hand, the second lead pair – Seo Dae-Young (Jin Goo) and Yoon Myung-Joo (Kim Ji-Won) also get their happy ending after facing many hardships. As they watch the snowfall in Urk where it snowed after 100 years, Dae-Young says, “This is late but my answer is that I’ll never leave you.” Then they share a gentle but passionate kiss. Myung-Joo’s father finally accepts their relationship.

Yoo Shi-Jin (Song Joong-Ki) gets a promotion and becomes a major from just being a Captain and leading the Alpha team. Almost at the end, Shi-Jin and Mo-Yeon revisit their favorite place and confront their feelings. They say ‘I love you’ to each other and share a few emotional moments. Cut to the end where everyone attends Daniel’s wedding. When everyone is seated and is seen enjoying their meals, suddenly light goes off and a waitress comes in and declares a volcano eruption. The whole group gets ready to help people once again and in one final frame, they walk toward their job.

Song Joong-Ki as Yoo Shi-Jin and Song Hye-Kyo as Kang Mo-Yeon are the perfect picks. Their on-screen chemistry was loved by the viewers. Each of the actors’ performances was top-notch in the drama, Descendants of the Sun.
