Is Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki Based on a True Story?

Shah Rukh Khan‘s most-awaited year-end film, Dunki, is all set for its release on December 21, 2023. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani, Vikram Kochhar, Anil Grover, and Jyoti Subhash, among others. The premise of the film revolves around a group of friends who use a backdoor process, namely donkey flight, to move to another country and then struggle to return home.

Red Chillies Entertainment and Jio Studios produced Dunki. Recently, the makers shared a video featuring Rajkumar Hirani, Shah Rukh Khan, and Taapsee Pannu, where they talked about various topics related to Dunki and the story behind the film.

Shah Rukh Khan’s new movie is based on real events

In the video, director Rajkumar Hirani shared why they made the film and how he came up with the idea. It also featured Shah Rukh Khan showing a picture of a house with an airplane cemented on top of it.

Elaborating on the photo, Rajkumar Hirani said, “Actually yeh ek ghar hai Jalandhar mein, Jalandhar ke aas pass. Jaha yeh ghar aap dekh rahe hai uske upar yeh itna bada jahaj cement ka bana hua hai. Aisa ek ghar nehi hai, aisa kai ghar hai jaha chhato pe jahaj lage hote hai. (This house is in Jalandhar, and the airplane is real. There are many houses like it in Jalandhar). So I was quite amazed by it. I wanted to know why is it like this.”

He further added, “Woha culture hai ki jin gharo ke bacche yeh ghar ka koi ek family member videsh pohoch jay, London, Canada, America jaha pohoch jay, toh wo ghar ke upar chhat pe ek jahaj laga deta hai. (There is a culture in Jalandhar when a family member goes abroad, they cement an airplane on top of their house).” He also revealed that the cemented airplane figure actually holds water tanks.

Initially, Rajkumar Hirani found it amusing, but after some research, he discovered the cultural aspects of moving abroad and how foreign laws now restrict families from doing so. He also highlighted that individuals believe life abroad is promising, but encountering difficulties in obtaining visas leads to illegal means.

He added, “Jis route se wo log jaate the usko Donkey route kehte hai toh wo Dunki mana ho gaya and I started researching the story. (They referred to the route they took as Donkey, which later became known as Dunki).”

Catch Dunki in theatres on December 21, 2023.
