First Look: Chastain in Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic Horror, Crimson Peak

Guillermo del Toro, last seen pitting massive mechs and kaiju against each other, will return next October with Crimson Peak, a decidedly more intimate, 19th century haunted house film he’s said recalls The Haunting and has described as a Gothic romance that’s “a little kinky,” where the “violence is very shocking.” Excitingly, the first image from the film is well on its way to backing that up.

Featuring stunning production and costume design (from Thomas E. Sanders and Kate Hawley, respectively), this first look at Crimson Peak heralds the spooky Sturm und Drang my sensibilities are dying for. Chastain stars alongside Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam in the film, described as follows: In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers. A haunting gothic horror story directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro, written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam.

Crimson Peak  is out October 16, 2015. [The Film Stage]
