Guillermo Del Toro Reveals Cronos, Blade II, and More Getting New 4K Transfers

Guillermo Del Toro has revealed he’s been working on new 4K transfers for four of his movies, including Cronos in 4K.

It’s an interesting selection of films from Del Toro’s career. Three come from his first four movies the highlight is clearly getting a smartened-up version of his feature-length directorial debut, 1992’s Cronos.

Cronos 4K and More In Time

Cronos tells the story of an ingenious alchemist, who when faced with his own mortality, tried to perfect an invention that would provide him with the key to eternal life. It was called the Cronos device. When he died more than 400 years later, he took the secrets of this remarkable device to the grave with him. Now, an elderly antique dealer has found the hellish machine hidden in a statue and learns about its incredible powers. The more he uses the device, the younger he becomes…but nothing comes without a price. Life after death is just the beginning as this nerve-shattering thriller unfolds and the fountain of youth turns bloody.

Mimic is a contentious one, as Del Toro famously found frustration in dealing with the Weinsteins and Miramax. A disease carried by common cockroaches is killing Manhattan children. In an effort to stop the epidemic, an entomologist, Susan Tyler, creates a mutant breed of insect that secretes a fluid to kill the roaches. This mutant breed was engineered to die after one generation, but three years later, Susan finds out that the species has survived and evolved into a large, gruesome monster that can mimic human form.

Blade II gave Del Toro his first taste of comic book adaptation before Hellboy, and continued the vampire-slaying adventures of Wesley Snipes’ titular daywalker.

Crimson Peak, Del Toro’s 9th feature film, is a Gothic supernatural tale. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers.

With Del Toro’s work seemingly almost done on these film’s transfers, hopefully, more details on extras and release dates will emerge soon. Crimson Peak’s 4k release is known already however, as Arrow Video is releasing that next month.
