15 of Today’s Stars Who Started in Horror

Viggo Mortensen in Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III

Before he starred in Gus Vansant’s unnecessary reboot of Psycho, realized A-List celebrity status, or became somewhat of a muse actor for genre great David Cronenberg, Viggo Mortensen played Eddie “Tex” Sawyer – an ultimately ill-fated hitchhiker – in Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. TCM III was Mortensen’s sixth feature film but one of his first major roles.

Leonardo DiCaprio in Critters 3

Academy Award-nominee Leonardo Dicaprio starred in Critters 3 years prior to becoming a regular fixture in Teen Beat Magazine or playing opposite Claire Danes in Romeo + Juliet 1996.

Young Dicaprio plays Josh, a young boy whose stepfather is a bit of a tyrant and a slumlord in Critters 3. The film continues the story of the cute, but mischievous Crites trying to take over the world. Critters 3 was Dicaprio’s first feature film role.

Gerard Butler in Tale of the Mummy

Gerard Butler has made a major name for himself in Hollywood, with one of his first major starring roles being in Dracula 2000. But before he became a celebrity, Butler starred as Burke alongside the legendary Christopher Lee in the almost unwatchable 1998 film Tale of the Mummy.

The picture received nearly unanimously bad reviews from critics and viewers alike, but that didn’t stop Butler from realizing a tremendous amount of success in the years to follow.
