Exclusive: Will Scott Derrickson Be Back to Direct Sinister 2?

He recently wrapped his book-to-film adaptation of Beware the Night and just acquired the rights to Drew Magary’s novel The Postmortal. Will that leave him time to be part of the planned Sinister sequel?

While talking to producer Jason Blum about his upcoming release Insidious: Chapter 2, he had this to say about Derrickson’s involvement in Sinister 2, which you can read after the jump…

“Well, he’s writing it and he’s gonna come back in some capacity. He’s definitely gonna produce it and whether or not he directs it or not, I don’t know.”

Derrickson will need some time to edit Beware the Night and then he might want to write The Postmortal, but considering Derrickson himself optioned the rights to that, there’s no guarantee the film will go into production anytime soon, and that means Sinister 2 could slip into his schedule. Back in May, Blum took the film to Cannes to launch Blumhouse International, the new arm of Blumhouse Productions dedicated to foreign sales, and that effort left Blum with this ideal timeline in mind:

“I want to try and start it in the next six months or so. I’m not sure that’s gonna happen, but those are our big plans.”

Should this actually happen, a few months down the line could be prime time for Derrickson, assuming he and co-writer C. Robert Cargill finish penning the script. However, should Derrickson opt to leave Sinister behind from a directorial standpoint, he’ll still be on board as writer and producer so there’s a good chance the sequel will be just as relentless and disturbing as the original.

Look for more with Blum and the cast before Insidious: Chapter 2 opens on Friday, September 13.
