Review: Jaws (Blu-ray)

Up until this point, I can see how fellow movie freaks could make it to now without owning a Blu-ray player, hell, I don’t buy nearly as many movies as I used to and it seems like everyone else has followed a similar path, but if you really love movies, you HAVE to own the Jaws Blu-ray.

There are only a few films in the world that I love enough that when I see them playing on television I watch them, most of them I have seen a hundred times, and Jaws is one of them. It doesn’t have to be at the beginning, it could be ten minutes from the end and I’ll watch it until the credits roll.  With this Blu-ray release, though, the bar is set very high.

Jaws has never looked better!

The Jaws Blu-ray not only looks incredible, but it sounds fantastic.  Sometimes we forget that Blu-ray isn’t just an upgraded picture but an entire experience that has been revamped for the home viewing audience.  The sound in the Jaws Blu-ray is some of the best I’ve ever heard.  John Williams’ score will sink into you and get under your skin unlike the previous times you have seen it.  Not only does the music of the film sound phenomenal, but the general sound of the movie is one of the best restorations I’ve ever heard.

Jaws is a community film at its core and any of the times that there is a gathering of people you’ll find yourself trying to focus in on the conversations of the minor characters and extras because you haven’t heard them before…and now you can.

The thing that got me the most excited about the Jaws Blu-ray – that equals the amount of excitement as seeing the film in HD – was the release of what has been heralded as the “definitive Jaws documentary” The Shark is Still Working.  This is one of those legendary films that you hear about as being something you have to see – it made some exclusive festival rounds – and it’s finally available on home video!

I should have tempered my expectations for the movie because while it certainly is thorough and a very good watch for Jaws fans young and old, it’s just as worthy a watch as the regular Making of Jaws feature (which is also included on the Blu-ray). Don’t get me wrong, The Shark is Still Working is a fine film and totally worth the watch but after years of hearing how genius and great it is, I was disappointed.

Do you like Jaws?  Of course you do, you’re reading a review for what is probably the 12th home video release of this movie.  You need this Blu-ray.  It is one of the best-looking HD restorations and remasterings that I have ever seen or heard.  You will fall in love with Jaws all over again because it looks incredible, sounds perfect, and has enough bonus features to teach you everything you ever wanted to know about Jaws.

With summer coming to a close, you might want to get one last swim in at your friend’s pool, pop in the Jaws Blu-ray instead.  You’ll be glad you did, and you won’t want to go swimming again until next summer.
