George Lucas Says Martin Scorsese Has ‘Changed His Mind’ on Marvel Movies

Ever since Martin Scorsese spoke about Marvel, many familiar Hollywood personalities have commented on his words. Now, George Lucas has added his own thoughts to the discourse surrounding Scorsese’s opinion on Marvel movies and appears to have also updated fans as to Scorsese’s thoughts on the matter as well.

George Lucas sides with Marvel, claims Martin Scorsese changed his mind too

In 2019, Martin Scorsese stated that he doesn’t think Marvel movies are “cinema.” Quentin Tarantino and Francis Ford Coppola also offered their critiques backing Scorsese’s words.

However, actors and directors working in the superhero genre including Chris Hemsworth and James Gunn countered their statements. Now, George Lucas has added his voice to the discussion and even offered what appears to be an update to Scorsese’s thoughts on the subject.

Speaking at Cannes (via World of Reel), Lucas said:

“Look. Cinema is the art of a moving image. So, if the image moves, then it’s cinema. I think Marty has kind of changed his mind a little bit.”

With Lucas being heavily involved with Star Wars, another CGI-heavy franchise like Marvel, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to many fans that he has respect for the MCU. However, his claim about Scorsese changing his mind about Marvel could cause the debate around Scorsese’s initial statements to flare up again.

Marvel faced more than one flop in 2023 and that has contributed to the discussion surrounding the concept of superhero fatigue. However, box office numbers continue to fall short of expectations across the industry due to multiple reasons post-COVID.

Marvel, Lucasfilm, and DC have slowed down to take countermeasures and fix behind-the-scenes issues in their movie departments. Marvel will only launch Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, and eventually come down to releasing two-three movies in a year.

Meanwhile, DC will only release James Gunn’s Superman in 2025 and Star Wars will not return to theaters until 2026.
