Ealy: Lycans Extinct in Underworld Awakening

Actor talks about the fourth film

When Michael Ealy’s family found out that he was going to be one of the new faces in the Underworld franchise. They weren’t too happy. Not because he was in Underworld Awakening, but because he didn’t tell them ahead of time.

“I had no idea how big the franchise was,” Ealy said at the press event for the film during Comic Con 2011 in San Diego. “My own sister didn’t speak to me for a month. I did not think that she cared about vampires and werewolves and demanded that she go to the premiere. I had family members I hadn’t heard from in years ask me about the film.”

Ealy plays Detective Sebastian in the fourth chapter, a human investigating some murders and is found by Selene (Kate Beckinsale). At first the pair do not get along but end up working together. One of the interesting tidbits Ealy gives is that in film, Lycans are allegedly extinct in this film – a far cry from the first three films where they were thriving.

So does this mean the film is set in the future?

“It is unclear how far it is in the future,” Ealy says. “I don’t know where it takes place or when. Time and place doesn’t really matter in a film like this. You get caught up with the characters and they all have a human dynamic.”

However, Ealy did get his feet wet with the whole 3-D phenomenon, something he found extremely cool.

“We shot in real 3-D and it looks amazing,” Ealy said. “I think you still have to have a good story and that’s part of the problem is everyone tries to put everything into 3-D without a good story. This story has some really compelling performances.”

And the difference between shooting in 3-D verses traditional film making?

“It is a bit of a slower process but ultimately more rewarding … just one more special effect that enhances the story. It was a lot of fun,” Ealy said.
