More editing underway? No!
Update: Our Universal reps have informed us that The Playlist has been misinformed and this is all untrue.
When reports came in that some last-minute tinkering was being done to The Wolfman with editors Walter Murch and Mark Goldblatt (look ’em up, they’re pros), I shrugged it off. It’s news, perhaps, in the names being involved – but continued editing is nothing new in production.
Today, however, a slice of information came along that had me raise an eyebrow. Nearly a month out from release, The Playlist has learned director Joe Johnston is back in the editing room working on his cut. Simultaneously, Universal production head Donna Langely is in a separate editing room, with an unnamed editor, doing another cut.
Test screenings here in L.A. have yielded a mixed response from those I’ve talked to who were in attendance. Those who liked it told me it was rich with atmosphere and channeled the old school Universal monster sensibilities we no longer see in horror. For those who gave it a thumbs down, they just thought it was silly.
Clearly, the film sounds like it knows its audience (lovers of the black and white classics). But all of this editing is making me wonder: “It’s the Wolf Man, it’s a pretty easy story to tell, what’s the problem here?”
It’s uncertain which cut will arrive in theaters come February 12, but Universal doesn’t have too long to offer more test screenings.
