Thriller enjoys a killer weekend
The Strangers took on the summer titans and lived to tell about it.
Bryan Bertino’s directorial debut starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman grossed an estimated $20 million (coming in at number three) in its three-day opening weekend. The thriller, about a young couple fending off home invaders, was up against New Line’s Sex and the City (bowing at number one with $55 million) and Indiana Jones the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull‘s second weekend (number two with $46 million).
Strangers‘ performed well beyond many industry insiders’ expectations. It marks Rogue Pictures’ largest opening – an R-rated venture at that. This should hopefully quell those naysayers hissing about PG-13 horror’s increasing success.
Next on Rogue’s upcoming horror slate: A live-action adaptation of the popular comic book Hack/Slash and a remake of The Last House on the Left.
