Vampires Top Sucky Box Office

30 Days of Night scores an estimated $16 million

With seven new movies opening this weekend, it was up to the only true horror movie, the Sam Raimi produced 30 Days of Night to show the other six movies how it’s done, grossing an estimated $16 million its opening weekend to top the box office in a relatively dismal weekend for new movies. That amount is the same amount that the other three new movies in the Top 10 made if combined.

Also, while not typically considered horror, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas in Disney Digital 3D was reissued into 564 theatres, where it grossed $5.15 million to open in eighth place with the highest per-theatre average in the Top 10 with an impressive $9,100 per site.

Obviously, horror fans are gearing up for Halloween in less than two weeks, which should bode well for the fourth installment of the “Saw” franchise next weekend.
