How I Met Your Mother fans were very disappointed when Netflix announced that the iconic sitcom is leaving the streaming service. Considering the fact that HIMYM got to be part of the Netflix lot in the US in 2024, it has become a go-to binge-watch for most viewers. However, its days on the giant streaming platform are numbered.
Here is the scoop about when HIMYM is leaving from Netflix, including the exact date and reason for it.
Why is How I Met Your Mother leaving Netflix and when?
Netflix has made the announcement that the sitcom will no longer be on its platform starting from December 3, 2025. This means that fans would have a limited time to get through the complete nine seasons before the series gets taken off the platform.
The main reason behind the exit of this legendary show from Netflix is the expiration of its licensing agreement with CBS (via Dexerto). It was made available on Netflix on June 3, 2024, under an 18-month contract that officially ends on December 3, 2025.
When that contract expires, Netflix will no longer have the rights to stream the sitcom. How I Met Your Mother fans have already started to see a “Leaving soon” notice on the show’s page which Netflix has confirmed.
This has been a common problem for many titles that are not Netflix Originals, as the company only licenses these titles for a limited period of time. Once the contract runs out, the rights for the series go back to the original distributor. In this case, CBS, or they get sold to another streaming service.
After the series moves away from Netflix, fans can head over to Hulu and Disney+, where keep all nine seasons are available. Viewers also have the option to buy individual episodes or complete seasons digitally on Amazon Prime Video, or get the DVD or Blu-ray box set which is currently listed at the price of about $43.99 at Walmart.
