The Hunting Party & 1 Other Canceled NBC Show Just Lost All Hopes of Returning

Cast option expirations just killed two NBC shows’ chances of finding a new home for good. The Hunting Party and one other canceled NBC project officially lost all hope of returning after a critical deadline passed.

How cast option expirations sealed the fate of The Hunting Party and Key Witness

Two NBC projects have reached their definitive end after cast options lapsed without renewal. Deadline reported that Universal Television chose not to extend options for The Hunting Party’s ensemble. With all actors now released from their contracts, efforts to resurrect the show have concluded permanently.

NBC spent additional time deliberating before canceling The Hunting Party on June 1 after two seasons. Universal Television subsequently shopped the drama procedural to other networks and platforms. The series had demonstrated strong performance across both Peacock and Netflix domestically.

The show’s first season generated significant traction when it arrived on Netflix in February. That momentum carried over to Peacock, where the series already maintained steady viewership with next-day episodes. Netflix had previously acquired licensing rights to earlier seasons, generating extra revenue for NBCUniversal.

However, that dual-streaming success ultimately proved insufficient to secure a rescue deal. Neither Peacock nor Netflix moved forward with a pickup, and no other buyer emerged. JJ Bailey created the series, which features Melissa Roxburgh, Nick Wechsler, Patrick Sabongui, Josh McKenzie and Sara Garcia.

NBC drama pilot Key Witness met an identical outcome under the same circumstances. Emily Deschanel starred in the Universal Television project, which fell just short of receiving a series order. ABC reportedly expressed some interest after NBC passed, but options expired before negotiations advanced.

Meanwhile, What The Dead Know remains the sole surviving unordered NBC 2026 pilot. The network extended Taylor Schilling’s option and plans to redevelop the project with a fresh writer. The Hunting Party originally premiered following an NFL broadcast and centered on investigators pursuing escaped killers. Jake Coburn, Thor Freudenthal and Keto Shimizu served as executive producers alongside Bailey.
