Moral Orel stood out from every show of its kind, and despite receiving widespread critical acclaim and a cult following in the subsequent years, it was canceled after its offbeat third season. What could have been the reason behind the cancellation of Moral Orel? Here is a breakdown.
Why did Moral Orel get canceled by Adult Swim after three seasons?
Dino Stamatopoulos created Moral Orel as an adult stop-motion animated black comedy. The first two seasons presented a satirical depiction of Middle American suburban life and religious fundamentalism. However, the third season took a more nihilistic approach. It introduced very dark themes, ranging from child sexual abuse to rape to latent homosexuality.
While this made the series stand out like never before, it clashed with Adult Swim’s approach and expectations for the show. As per reports, Adult Swim did not like how serious the show was getting, and Stamatopoulos refused to change his approach.
This perhaps snowballed into the show’s cancellation after the bleak third season. After the show ended, the third season remained critically acclaimed and developed a huge cult following. It stands apart from any animated work of its time and continues to blaze a trail in the genre.
The network never disclosed the exact reason for the cancellation. Reports state that the creators made many episodes in the third season but never released them. Another possible reason for the cancellation was that the narrative had concluded. Most believe that the show’s direction was the primary reason for its eventual end.
Moral Orel remains one of the most notable shows of its time. Adult Swim released a special spinoff, titled Before Orel: Trust, on November 19, 2012, about four years after the last episode aired.
