The much-anticipated trailer of Thunderbolts* has finally dropped. The action fantasy drama revolves around a team of antiheroes fighting for the government. As fans gear up to welcome this new addition to the MCU, rumors are surging around the comeback of an iconic character. It is none other than Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson. So, will Johansson return as Black Widow in Thunderbolts*?
Here is everything you need to know about the beloved MCU’s character entry in the film.
Will Scarlett Johansson return as Black Widow in Marvel’s Thunderbolts*?
No, Scarlett Johansson won’t return as Black Widow in Marvel’s Thunderbolts*.
Although Johansson won’t be reprising her role in the film, the good news is she is serving as an executive producer. This news was first dropped in 2021 by ComicBook when Marvel President Kevin Feige hinted at working with the actress on an MCU Project. Johansson’s involvement as a producer in Thunderbolt* makes sense as she was an executive producer on 2021 Black Widow as well.
As MCU fans are aware, Natasha Romanoff died in Avengers: Endgame following a heartbreaking sacrifice to defeat the mighty Thanos. When Thunderbolts was revealed to be following Black Widow’s story continuing Johansson’s stint as an executive producer, there was optimism regarding her comeback.
However, that is not the case, especially after the character’s tragic passing in Endgame. Moreover, given the already star-studded cast of Thunderbolt*, fans cannot expect even a cameo from Johnson. In addition, the movie features the character of Romanoff’s sister Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh. She is one of the members of the Thunderbolts who was trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow.
While viewers will miss Scarlett Johansson’s presence, they can look forward to her work as a producer. It will be exciting to see what she’s brought to the table after the 2021 prequel.
Thunderbolts* is slated to release on May 2, 2025.
