Damsel: Is It Based on a Book & a True Story?

After watching Damsel, fans are wondering whether the film is based on a true story or a book. So, here’s everything you need to know about its inspiration.

Is Damsel based on a book?

Damsel is not based on a book, but it is the other way around. It features an original screenplay by Dan Mazeau, which was adapted into a book by Evelyn Skye.

On October 18, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Netflix collaborated with Random House Worlds and author Evelyn Skye to come up with a novel based on the original existing screenplay of Damsel.

Skye said in a statement, “The easiest way to think about it is this: Dan Mazeau wrote the original screenplay. I was able to read an early draft and was given free rein to write my own version of the story, which ultimately became the novel. Both the novel and the movie may stem from the same origin, but they are also each their own unique works of art.”

Skye further stated that her collaboration with Mazeau allowed them to bounce ideas off of each other while keeping the core of the story intact. The book came out in 2023. Following that, Millie Bobby Brown brought Elodie’s character to life in 2024.

Is Damsel based on a true story?

Damsel is not based on a true story.

It is a fantasy adventure where Millie Bobby Brown’s Elodie fights a dragon. So, it obviously can’t be based on a true story and real events.

Besides Brown, Damsel stars Nick Robinson, Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, Brooke Carter, and Shohreh Aghdashloo (voice).

The official synopsis for Damsel reads:

“A young woman’s marriage to a charming prince turns into a fierce fight for survival when she’s offered up as a sacrifice to a fire-breathing dragon.”
