The Postcard Killings ending explained

The Postcard Killings ends with Detective Jacob Kanon saving Dessie Lombard and letting the killers of his daughter go.

Halfway through the film, the audience gets to find out that there’s not one, but two serial killers involved. Sylvia and Mac Randolph were posing as a married couple across Europe. Being highly educated in art history, they recreated famous pieces of art with the dead bodies of couples that they befriended traveling through the continent.

After killing Pieter and his wife in Stockholm, they were finally taken into custody. But the authorities couldn’t make an official arrest as they came in highly prepared. With no evidence to hold them, the police and Interpol had to let them go. But as Jacob Kanon feared, maintaining a watch on them was of no use. The Randolphs still managed to escape after killing another couple and using them to send their message.

Eventually, Jacob managed to figure out that Sylvia and Mac Randolph were actually siblings. With their twisted pieces of art, they were telling their story of an incestuous relationship. So, Jacob called them out by using a Dessie Lombard’s tabloid piece on himself. Besides telling Jacob’s story, the editorial also brings Sylvia and Mac’s story to light in front of the world.

So, they reply to Lombard for bringing attention to their love in a meaningful way and decide to make her their final piece of art. That’s how Jacob lures them out, by having them follow him and Dessie into the cold. After a chase sequence, the couple manages to crash Jacob’s car and abduct Dessie.

But as they are about to kill her, Jacob catches up to them. In the struggle between them, Simon takes a bullet to save Sylvia, and she drags him into the vast snowy landscape. Saving Dessie, Jacob lets them go assuming that the snow will get to both of them. He brings the remains of his daughter back to the US and finds closure in that.

Who is the killer in The Postcard Killings?

The film reveals that Sylvia and Mac Randolph were aliases, and the real identities of the killers were Simon Jr. and Marina Haysmith.

They were the adopted siblings of Simon Sr. Haysmith, who educated them in art but raised them in an abusive environment. Eventually, Simon’s children got separated after his fraudulent criminal activities. But by the time Simon Jr. and Marina reunited, the abuse they had endured had turned into trauma, which caused them to lash out. As their love wasn’t accepted by their father and society, they used “art” to express their pain.

While Simon Jr. may have died, Marina managed to survive the snow as the film ended with her calling her father to tell him what she had done to get back at him.
