Squid Game: The Challenge: Is It Season 2, Prequel, or Spin-Off?

With Squid Game: The Challenge releasing on Netflix, fans are wondering how it is related to the original K-drama. Is it a sequel, prequel, or a spinoff set in the same world as Squid Game? Here’s all you need to know.

Inspired by the deadly games from Netflix’s biggest series, “Squid Game,” The Challenge features real-life contestants to compete in a series of high-stakes children’s games. They play to win $4.56 million in this reality contest, which doesn’t relate to or expand the narrative of the K-drama.

Squid Game: The Challenge is a real-life game show. Don’t consider it as the second season of Squid Game because it is not a sequel, prequel, or spinoff set in the same world as the K-drama. The Challenge just brings the idea of “Squid Game” to life.

It features 456 contestants who compete in multiple children’s games throughout the season to win a grand cash prize of $4.56 million. As the season progresses, multiple contestants are eliminated from the show. But don’t you worry, as none of them are going to die for real like they did in the K-drama.

Due to the mammoth success of the original show, production companies The Garden and Studio Lambert brought Squid Game: The Challenge to life. It will launch ten episodes, which will be released on a weekly basis after a five-episode premiere on November 22, 2023.

The official synopsis of Squid Game: The Challenge reads:

“456 real players will enter the competition show in pursuit of a life-changing reward of USD $4.56 million. As they compete through a series of games inspired by the original show – plus surprising new additions – their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.”
