Rebel Moon: What Is It Based On? Is It a Sequel or a Prequel?

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire is soon to hit Netflix and even get a limited theatrical release before that. But following its marketing campaign, many wish to find out what it is based on, and whether it is a sequel or prequel. Here’s all you need to know about its inspiration.

Is Rebel Moon based on a book?

No, Rebel Moon is not based on a book. It is an original story created by Zack Snyder, inspired by Star Wars.

The Justice League director famously made an R-rated Star Wars pitch that wasn’t greenlit by Lucasfilm in the past. It would have taken place in one of the galaxies far far away, but Snyder wanted to make it entirely original and not include any familiar Star Wars characters.

With him finding a new home at Netflix with Army of the Dead, his R-rated Star Wars-inspired pitch also got greenlit. As its trailers have suggested, the upcoming two movies will have elements similar to Star Wars (such as a lightsaber equivalent) but will follow an entirely new storyline taking place in a different universe.

Directed and created by Zack Snyder and also co-written by him, Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, Rebel Moon will have no relation to Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars.

Is Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire a sequel or prequel?

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is the first film in a new Netflix franchise. It will lead to a sequel called Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver.

Bringing a fresh space-centric narrative to life, Rebel Moon is set in a universe controlled by the corrupt government of the Mother World. It will see a group of cosmic warriors banding together to take a stand against the oppressive armies of the Mother World.

The official synopsis of Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire reads:

“When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

The film stars Sofia Boutella and Charlie Hunnam in the lead. Others involved are Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Fra Fee, Ed Skrein, and Anthony Hopkins.
