After reports of Robert Downey Jr.’s return, many are wondering if Avengers: Secret Wars will bring Chris Evans back as Captain America. Here’s all you need to know about Evans’ potential return to the MCU following Avengers: Endgame.
Is Chris Evans returning in Avengers: Secret Wars?
Chris Evans reportedly agreed to return in Avengers: Secret Wars prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
After stating that Robert Downey Jr. will be back as Iron Man, credible Marvel scooper MyTimeToShineHello reported that Chris Evans is also confirmed to be back in Avengers 6. She even stated that, according to her sources, Evans had already agreed to this before the actors’ strike.
While it should be taken with a grain of salt, until it’s 100% officially confirmed, Evans’ return in Secret Wars shouldn’t surprise anyone. Marvel is reportedly setting up Avengers: Secret Wars to be the biggest crossover event ever, turning the dream crossover of the OG Avengers, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man into reality.
What Chris Evans said about his MCU return
Evans has always maintained the notion of returning someday in the future, but not in the next couple of years. In 2022, he stated that coming back to the MCU right now would be a “tall order.” The moment of his return would have to be perfect.
As recently as August 2023, he was asked about returning as Captain America at the C2E2 fan convention and he said (via Variety):
“It’s tough, because look, I love that role deeply. He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there’s more Steve Rogers stories tell, sure. But at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it…it’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don’t want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well.”
He also added:
“As much as I’m connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people. It doesn’t quite feel right right now.”
So, fans can hope for his return in Avengers: Secret Wars, but shouldn’t expect it to happen in Phase 5.
