Chainsaw Man
Just like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man is one of the newer shonen series that is around the same level in popularity. Similar to the Yuji Itadori and Sukuna situation, Chainsaw Man’s main character, Denji, gains his powers after making a contract with his dog-like devil, Pochita. After Denji and Pochita fuse together, Denji develops the ability to become Chainsaw Man, allowing him to change some of his body parts into chainsaws.
Chainsaw Man is also a dark fantasy series. If you’re looking for something with more gore, violence, and dark humor, Chainsaw Man is a must-watch.
Yu Yu Hakusho
Yu Yu Hakusho wouldn’t really be considered dark, but the plot revolves around the supernatural. The protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi, dies after getting hit by a car while trying to get a kid out of the way. Yusuke’s death catches the Spirit World by surprise. The son of its ruler, Koenma, gives Yusuke a series of tests to get his body back. After Yusuke is revived, he earns the title of Spirit Detective and has to help out in investigating supernatural occurrences in the Human World.
Yu Yu Hakusho influences some aspects of Jujutsu Kaisen. Itadori himself makes a reference to Urameshi’s infamous Spirit Gun in the first season.
Noragami
Noragami is another series that has supernatural elements, such as gods and demons. Hiyori Iki, a middle school student, saves a stranger from a car accident. The stranger turns out to be Yato, a minor deity who accepts requests for 5 yen each. Hiyori survives, but her soul can now leave her body. She asks Yato to fix her body, and Hiyori learns more about the supernatural.
A lot of things happen in Noragami’s plot, and some take a dark turn. The series is short and will get you hooked.
