August 23 brings home The Huntsman: Winter’s War, The Nice Guys, Ash vs. Evil Dead Season One and lots more!

The story of Snow White and the Huntsman continues at home with the August 23 release of Universal Pictures‘ big-budget prequel, The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Also coming home after a recent big-screen debut is Shane Black’s pitch perfect ’70s LA noir caper The Nice Guys, as well as the animated video game adaptation Ratchet and Clank. Then, leading the small screen charge, is the recent TV miniseries Roots. August 23 also sees home video releases for some recent indie titles. Be on the lookout for Blu-rays of the horror feature Clown (from Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts), Kieran Darcy-Smith’s western The Duel (starring Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson), Matthew Brown’s The Man Who Knew Infinity (a biopic starring Dev Patel as mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan) and Rebecca Miller’s Maggie’s Plan (a clever drama starring Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke and Julianne Moore). The week also brings home Todd Solondz dark, dark dramedy Wiener Dog as an Amazon exclusive, while Terence Davies’ Sunset Song and Louise Osmond’s Dark Horse arrive on DVD only.
Shout! Factory continues their new line of Shout! Select titles with the Blu-ray debut of 1988’s Martin Brest classic Midnight Run. The Scream Factory label then books another stay at the Bates Motel with Psycho IV: The Beginning.
The Criterion Collection has two new inductees this week. Tony Richardson’s 1961 British New Wave classic A Taste of Honey joins the collection alongside Hiroshi Teshigahara’s 1964 surreal masterpiece Woman in the Dunes.
Kino Lorber, meanwhile, has a number of interesting catalogue titles arriving August 23. The company’s focus on Fritz Lang continues with the Blu-ray debut of Lang’s early silent serial adventure The Spiders. There’s also a new John Ford title with 1926’s 3 Bad Men, a Bela Lugosi cult classic with 1932’s Chandu the Magician, and a trip to the swinging sixties with the classic comic strip adaptation Modesty Blaise.
Lots of small screen titles come home August 23, including the first season of the acclaimed STARZ‘ series Ash vs Evil Dead. The week also delivers the first seasons of The CW‘s DC Legends of Tomorrow, FOX‘s Lucifer and Netflix‘s Narcos alongside the second season of FX‘s The Strain and the sixth season of AMC‘s The Walking Dead.
Arriving on DVD only is the first season of NBC’s new comedy Superstore, the third season of FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the fourth season of CBS‘s Elementary, the fifth season of ABC‘s Scandal, the eighth (and final) season of ABC’s Castle and the 13th season of CBS’ NCIS. Shout! Factory, meanwhile, goes back a few years for the never-before-released tenth season of NYPD Blue.
Digital HD titles arriving August 23 include Genius, based on the real life relationship between Thomas Wolfe and editor Max Perkins, Jon M. Chu‘s heist sequel Now You See Me 2, and Jon Favreau‘s hugely-successful Walt Disney Pictures family adventure The Jungle Book. Also arriving digitally this week is HBO‘s Looking: The Movie.
