Einar and Thorfinn rush to Sverkel’s place. Arnheid reveals that she helped Gardar escape. They fled to Sverkel’s house, where she treated his wounds and hid him inside the house. Snake and two of his men are keeping a close eye, thinking that Gardar escaped and hid somewhere. Arnheid confesses that she dreamt of a life where she and Gardar could be a family again. Einar and Thorfinn offer to help them escape.
Sverkel tells Snake that becoming a slave is caused by bad luck. He tells Snake to put away his sword and that he can take over his farm. He argues that it would be a good chance for Snake to straighten out his life, but Snake dismisses it. One of the men spots someone hiding behind a tree, thinking it’s Gardar. Snake and his men prepare to chase after the man, who is actually Einar. Meanwhile, Thorfinn loads Gardar into Sverkel’s horse and cart with Sverkel’s approval.
Snake notices that the man is running too fast and decides to head back to Sverkel’s house. He sees Thorfinn and tells him he won’t negotiate and he’ll kill Thorfinn if he doesn’t hand over Gardar. Thorfinn visualizes Askeladd talking to him if he’ll fight or remain a pacifist. He then prepares a stance that makes Snake cautious.
