An escaped slave on a different farm sets fire to the house and kills his master and family. Thorfinn asks Einar if he has decided on what he wants to do once he’s free. Einar is still unsure, but he knows there’s a chance for him to free Arnheid if he stays with Ketil. Meanwhile, Snake rushes to the farm and sees that Sverkel has collapsed.
Sverkel is bed-bound and is too weak to move. Meanwhile, Arnheid gets assigned to take care of Sverkel. Snake, Einar, Thorfinn, Arnheid, and Sverkel enjoy their dinner. Later, Fox tells Snake about a slave who escaped from Kjallakr’s farm. The reward to catch the slave is three horses. The following day, Fox, Lizard, and Badger find the escaped slave. However, the three start arguing and talking loudly, and the slave attacks them.
Elsewhere, Thorfinn eavesdrops on Snake reading the bible to Sverkel because he finds it interesting. Snake tells Thorfinn and Einar that Sverkel probably doesn’t have much time left to live, so they should repay his kindness while they can. Suddenly, the escaped slave passes by, speeding on a horse. Fox and Badger follow, screaming that the man is the escaped slave. Arnheid recognizes the man as Gardar, her husband.
