On their official Twitter account, acclaimed animation company Studio Ghibli posted a video teasing a collaboration between the Spirited Away creators and Lucasfilm.
Though very few details have been unveiled involving this new team-up, this isn’t the first time that Star Wars has been adapted into a form of anime. Last year’s Disney+ series Star Wars Visions saw the iconic franchise reinterpreted by multiple anime studios, including Studio Trigger and Science SARU. Each episode was an independent story that featured an entirely different visual style than the last.
On the other hand, Studio Ghibli is one of the most beloved film studios in the animation industry. Founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, and Isao Takahata, Ghibli is the animation studio behind anime classics like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl’s Moving Castle.

There’s plenty of potential for a collaboration between the two studios, especially with many fans looking for Star Wars to try new and diverse things. In the meantime, Season 2 of Star Wars Visions is set to release on Disney+ in early 2023 and will feature a more global variety of art styles from around the world.
