It’s Super Bowl weekend, which means that as in past years, the box office is going to go quiet on Sunday as many Americans stay home to watch the 15 hours of football programming leading up to the 47th Super Bowl game between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens. Not that it matters much since this is proving to be another slow weekend with only one movie bringing in more than $10 million.

That movie was Warm Bodies (Summit Entertainment), filmmaker Jonathan Levine’s (50/50) PG-13 romantic zombie comedy based on Isaac Marion’s young adult novel and starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry and John Malkovich, which won the weekend with an estimated $20 million in 3,009 locations. Averaging $6,600 per site, its audience was seriously skewed towards younger women with 60% of the audience being female and 65% being under 25 with a reported CinemaScore of A- among that demographic.

The R-rated fairy tale action movie Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (Paramount Pictures), starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, took a 53% drop in its second weekend to take second place with $9.2 million, bringing its total to $34.4 million.

David O. Russell’s own romantic comedy Silver Linings Playbook, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, continues to bring in big business from its word-of-mouth and awards attention, adding another $8.1 million to bring its total to $80.4 million.

The Jessica Chastain horror flick Mama (Universal) took fourth place with $6.7 million, down 49% as it brought its total to $58.3 million.

Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller Zero Dark Thirty (Sony) followed in fifth place with $5.3 million and $77.8 million to date.

Sylvester Stallone’s return with the action flick Bullet to the Head (Warner Bros.), co-starring Sung Kang and Jason Momoa, became the latest action movie starring a member of “The Expendables” crew that tanked at the box office as it brought in abysmal $4.5 million in 2,404 theaters to take sixth place with a per-site average of $1,872 per site.

Jason Statham’s crime-thriller Parker dropped down to seventh place with $3.2 million, down 54% with a 10-day gross of $12.4 million.

After that, it was all about the Oscar-nominated movies with Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (The Weinstein Company) taking eighth place with $3 million bringing its total to $151 million, Tarantino’s first movie to reach that benchmark.

Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables (Universal) followed with $2.4 million with $141 million grossed so far, followed by Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln (DreamWorks) also with $2.4 million and $170.8 million total.

The biggest surprise of the weekend had to be Ben Affleck’s Argo, which moved back into the Top 12 at #11 with $2.1 million in 935 theaters, bringing its total to $120 million since opening last October.

The Top 10 grossed $64 million which was down roughly 27% from Super Bowl weekend last year when both Chronicle (20th Century Fox) and The Woman in Black (CBS Films) topped the box office with $20 million each. If you think that weekend-to-weekend drop is bad, just you wait until next week!

The low profile Al Pacino-Christopher Walken crime-comedy Stand Up Guys (Roadside Attractions) also opened in 659 theaters on Friday in which it brought in $1.5 million over the weekend, averaging $2,300 per site but not doing well enough to make it into the Top 10.

Opening in New York and L.A., the Oscar-nominated Israeli doc The Gatekeepers (Sony Pictures Classics) scored the highest per-theater average of the weekend with the $66 thousand it grossed in its three theaters. Following the passing of the former New York City mayor on Friday, the documentary KOCH (Zeitgeist Films) also fared well, grossing $40,000 in its two New York theaters.
