Mandalay Pictures to Produce City on Fire from Cory Miller

Mandalay Pictures is on board to produce City on Fire, which was written by Cory Miller, according to Deadline. Miller was on the Black List (the list of the best motion picture screenplays not yet produced) in 2013 for his script Line of Duty. The film will be produced by Jason Michael Berman (The Birth of a NationBurning Sands) and Alex Ott (Suicide SquadEnd of Watch).

According to the site, the film “follows the 1985 events in West Philadelphia when three city blocks were burned to the ground and destroyed 62 row houses, leaving 11 people dead and hundreds homeless. City on Fire tells the incendiary true story of the escalating conflict between the City of Philadelphia and the radical group MOVE, which led to an armed siege in a residential neighborhood and one of the most shocking decisions ever made by a City against its citizens.”

On his website, Miller’s bio states, “Prior to moving to LA, Cory spent four years in New York City investigating complaints against the NYPD for the New York City government. Cory trained with the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau. Part private investigator, part lawyer, this job took Cory all over the city and exposed him to countless stories involving corruption, excessive force, police shootings, and the best and worst of the NYPD and New York’s citizens. This experience forms the basis for many of the stories that Cory tells.” He attended UCLA and earned an MFA in writing and directing. His short films Allen Mack and Just One Look were awarded the UCLA DGA spotlight award. Allen Mack won the New York Festivals Silver Medal for short film and was named Best Screenplay & Best Narrative Film at the UCLA Festival of New Creative Work.
