Gambit Production Start Date Delayed, Doug Liman to Direct Amazon Feature First

Gambit production start date delayed

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that re-writes on 20th Century Fox‘s X-Men spinoff Gambit has forced production on the film to delay its start date. Previous reports indicated the film would begin in March of this year, but the trade now reports things may not kick-off until the end of 2016. Magic Mike writer Reid Carolin is reportedly penning the latest draft.

As a result, Edge of Tomorrow‘s Doug Liman, who was brought on to direct the film after the departure of Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), may take on another project in the interim. THR says Liman is in talks to direct Amazon Studios’ The Wall, a psychological thriller and the first spec script purchased by the online retailer-turned-content provider.

The Wall is described as a smaller-scale project which Liman hopes to direct in the late spring or early summer before returning to helm Gambit at the end of the year.

In the Gambit adaptation, Channing Tatum will star as the titular mutant, a role he has been vying for for some time. He’s joined by Lea Seydoux as the female lead of the film, Bella Donna Boudreaux, the daughter of the leader of the New Orleans Assassins’ Guild and Remy LeBeau’s first love. A new release date for the film has not been announced.

Created by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee in 1990, Gambit, a New Orleans native mutant, quickly became a fan favorite due to his kinetic energy manipulation abilities and penchant for stealing. The character’s only big screen appearance to date (outside his name being featured as an Easter egg in X2) was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch.
